Moving - a necessary evil

Michael and I have decided that we reeeeeally don't like moving and hope to do it as few times as possible during our lives.  During our first year of marriage we have already moved three times, though it seems like more considering all the "in-between" steps.  For example, in June when we moved out of my parents' basement to my aunt and uncle's basement a few blocks away, we carried boxes from house to car, house to car, house to car, and then from car to house, car to house, car to house.  Then two months later we carried the same boxes back out from house to moving pod, house to moving pod, house to moving pod and then FINALLY in Virginia from moving pod to apartment, moving pod to apartment, moving pod to apartment.

Whew.  Yep, we are happy to be settled for a couple of years.

But even though moving is a pain, things really went as well as they could have this time around.  Our stuff arrived on time and undamaged, and for that we are grateful.  (Some of our friends out here just barely got their stuff delivered and they arrived in Virginia before we did, poor guys.)

Here are just a few pictures documenting our getting settled.

Yep, we really did this.  That's a mattress and box-springs strapped onto our little Honda Accord.  Luckily Costco is only a couple miles up the road!  (A guy out jogging took a photo of us on his iPhone as he passed by - and I say as he passed by because we were going extremely slow!  Haha...)

This is when we had power and internet, but no furniture yet.  Our first real meal in the new apartment consisted largely of leftover snacks from the road trip.

Whew!  Finally the pod is unloaded.  Now where are we going to put all this stuff...?

Yay!  We have a kitchen table and chairs.  Thank you Goodwill!

No, that dresser hasn't been at all unloaded yet.  That's exactly how it was driving all the way home.

This was probably my favorite thrift-store find as we shopped around for furniture.  I have always wanted a big, pretty hat like the ones in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and My Fairy Lady.  (Why don't we wear those anymore?)  This one cost just $2.00 at Goodwill.  That's right!!  And it's practically in mint condition!  Now I just need to find someplace to wear it (many have suggested the Kentucky Derby).

Our first guests!  We're grateful to have made some awesome friends already.  The Blakes and the Jacobs are super fun people.  Adam and Alex are in the PT program with Michael, so they see a lot of each other.

Okay, time for a competition.
Who thinks they have moved the greatest number of times during their life?
Ready, go!

  1. Your mom is the master mover. You should just hire her every time you have to move!

    1. Amen. Her skills have definitely been honed over the years. Actually, my mom should and could be hired out for just about any creative project. She's amazing.

  2. That hat rocks. I used to sell hat on ebay. One of a kind ones sell for a chunk. Think about an ebay side business with all your thrifting. It can be really fun!

  3. Okay, how many times have I moved in my life? (This is Steve)

Before married (including student apartments, but not mission transfers): Provo to Ithaca NY, Merida Venezuela, Provo (Cherry Lane), Orem (200 South), Provo (Apache Lane), Guatemala, Provo (Apache Lane), Santiago Chile (Av. Guillermo Acuña), Santiago (can't remember the street name), Santiago (Av. El Bosque Mission Home), Provo (Deseret Towers), Santiago (Av. El Bosque), Provo (Apache Lane), Provo (at Paul and Rachelle's), Mission to Melbourne, Australia, San Jose Costa Rica, Provo (Ash Avenue), Provo (Chinese House), Los Angeles (apt on Sepulveda Boulevard), Provo (Chinese House), Taipei Taiwan, Kaohsiung Taiwan, Provo (Men's Japanese House), Provo (Apache Lane). That's 24 times in 24 years!!

Since married: Tokyo, New York (116th Street), New York (118th Street), Sapporo, Kensington MD, New Providence NJ, Sydney, Singapore, Bangkok (Raintree 772), Bangkok (Raintree 776), Shanghai, and now Sydney coming up. That makes 12 times in 27 years that we have changed homes. Probably not a record, but still pretty good.

Grand total of 36 moves in 51 years. And yes, I am tired of moving, but somehow we keep doing it. Rolling stone and all that stuff, I guess.
